Travelling along the Adriatic main road towards Šibenik, after some 25 km, you will come across a natural phenomenon - the two equally beautiful and yet so very different azures. On one side you will see the well indented Adriatic coast, famous for its inviting beauty and clean sea, and on the other side you will see the largest natural lake in Croatia. It’s a flooded Karst lake filled with brackish water and it represents a rare example of kryptodepresion. It is about 14 km long, 4 km wide and 4 m deep and it’s a true natural phenomenon offering many interesting sights. Besides the downstream of river Neretva, this is the only swamp in the Mediterranean part of Croatia.
Because it is one of the rare and almost intact natural habitats of water birds as well as because of its fresh water springs and biodiversity, the Vrana Lake and its surroundings were declared a Nature Park in 1999. To the present day 241 bird species have been recorded of which 102 nest in the park area. The park is also interesting for sport fishermen who can fish throughout the year. Arranged footpaths, cycling routes (40 km) and beautiful belvederes (of which we have to mention the beautiful belvedere Kamenjak with a view of the entire lake, the beginning of the Kornati islands and some places and small towns on the coast…) will be thrilling for all nature lovers.
The beautiful bay of Telaščica on the south-eastern side of Dugi otok is 9 nm far from Sukošan. It is about 10 km long, protected from winds from the open sea by the high cliffs of Grpašćak and Muravjak and the north-eastern coast is protected of the wind bora. Thanks to its extreme beauty, richness and importance, this bay surrounded by 13 islands and islets, together with 6 islets inside the bay of Telašćica itself, was proclaimed a Nature Park in 1988.
The area of "Telašćica" Nature Park is a distinctly contrasted area with quiet and peaceful beaches and laid down coastline on one side and wild and rough cliffs on the other, it is the area of the Aleppo pine-trees and holly oak woods on one side and bare rocky grounds on the other and also the area of cultivated fields of vineyards and olive-trees, as well as the area of degraded forms of the flora covering dry habitats. The undersea world has more than 250 plant and 300 animal species and it is possible to dive on a few attractive location next to the cliffs. A special attraction are so-called «Stene», rising up to 200 m above the sea level and falling down vertically up to 90 m and into the salt lake called «Mir» with its curative characteristics.
